My game is crashing on launch. What can I do?
If you are having trouble launching the game, please make sure that you have the latest drivers installed for your computer, particularly with your video card, and verify the installation files using the platform you used to install the game.
A recent update to a remote networking program called Citrix has prevented some users from launching certain Unity based games like Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Users who have this program have been recommending rolling back updates or uninstalling the program to be able to play Deadfire as normal. Information about this can be found here. If this does not work for you, please follow the steps below to continue troubleshooting to get Deadfire to launch properly.
Steam
If you are playing on Steam and are experiencing strange behavior such as random crashes, missing textures or text, or you can't start the game, we recommend verifying your cache:
- Go to your Steam library.
- Right-click on Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
- Click Properties.
- Click on the Local Files tab.
- Click Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
This will take some time and can correct installation issues. if that still does not work, try making sure you have the latest OS updates installed, verify you have the latest video card drivers installed, and also try a reboot of the machine.
GOG
If you are playing through GOG's Galaxy client, you can verify your cache by:
- Click on Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire in your library.
- Click the More drop-down.
- Select Manage installation and click Verify / Repair.
This will take some time and can correct installation issues. if that still does not work, try making sure you have the latest OS updates installed, verify you have the latest video card drivers installed, and also try a reboot of the machine.
If you are not using the Galaxy client and downloaded directly from GOG, and the game does not work after rebooting and making sure you have the latest system updates, you may have to try uninstalling the game and reinstall it with the latest full installers.
